History
Amethyst has taken many forms through the ages with jewelry made from it being used as far back as 2000 BC. A member of the quartz family, amethyst was prized by the ancient Greeks, Romans and Egyptians. While the Egyptians valued it purely for its aesthetic value, the Greeks and Romans believed it was capable of warding off intoxication, with the gem’s deep purple color indicating the look and feel of ‘ red wine’. In fact, the word amethyst derives from the old Greek word ‘Amethystos’ which translates to ‘not intoxicated’.
The gem transitioned during Middle Ages, as violet had become the prominent color of royalty, with several members of the English Regalia proudly displaying trinkets and baubles inlaid with amethyst. Leonardo Da Vinci was also a fan, believing the gem was capable of warding off evil thoughts. Some historians even credit Saint Valentine with wearing an amethyst ring carved in the image of cupid.
Mostly mined in Russia to begin with, the gem passed through antiquity into modern times as more deposits were found across the globe. Today, amethyst geodes are found in large parts of South America and Africa with Brazil being a major supplier.

Associated with the mind and spirit, amethyst is highly valued for its calming properties. It protects against negative energies and aids in sound sleep and relaxation. Guiding the thought process, it also bolsters intuition and provides insight. The crystal is also tied to creativity and imagination as it opens the bearer up to new ideas and innovations.
